Healthcare Ransomware Attacks Surge in 2024

Healthcare Ransomware Attacks Are Accelerating

Healthcare ransomware attacks are rising at an alarming rate across the U.S. According to SonicWall’s 2024 Healthcare Threat Brief, more than 14 million patients were affected by malware breaches in 2024 alone.

The latest report from SonicWall, the 2024 Healthcare Threat Brief, highlights an alarming rise in cyber threats targeting the U.S. healthcare sector. Over 14 million patients have been affected by malware breaches in 2024 alone, while outdated systems continue to leave healthcare providers exposed to ransomware attacks. SonicWall’s report shows that 91% of attacks on healthcare systems involve ransomware, despite significant efforts to block them.

Healthcare’s Systemic Vulnerability

Many healthcare organizations rely on outdated systems, which leaves them particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks. In fact, SonicWall found that 60% of healthcare breaches stem from vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange. As cybercriminals evolve their tactics, these minimally protected systems become prime targets.

Doug McKee, Executive Director of Threat Research at SonicWall, stressed the importance of staying informed about the latest threats. He noted that any disruption to healthcare operations, such as losing access to patient data, could have life-threatening consequences, which often leads providers to pay cybercriminals to restore access quickly.

The Crucial Role of MSPs/MSSPs

With the growing digitization of health records and the increased use of telehealth services, the healthcare sector’s attack surface has expanded. Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) are critical in this environment, offering real-time system monitoring, robust security, and compliance with regulations. By partnering with MSPs/MSSPs, healthcare providers can offload the burden of cybersecurity, ensuring their networks are secure while they focus on patient care.

Securing the Future

The 2024 Healthcare Threat Brief emphasizes the urgent need for healthcare organizations to strengthen their cybersecurity infrastructure. Patients deserve to know their sensitive data is safe, and MSPs/MSSPs provide a cost-effective solution to combat the ever-growing threat of ransomware.
